Prenatal Care Timeline

Caring for you baby starts way before your baby is born—as soon as you find out you are pregnant. Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic knows exactly what you need, when you need it, and we’ll partner with you throughout your pregnancy and beyond.
1st Trimester - last period to 14 weeks | 2nd Trimester - 14 to 28 weeks | 3rd Trimester - 28-40 weeks

4 weeks

  • Missed period
  • Positive pregnancy test
  • Call to schedule an appointment
  • Stop smoking
  • No alcohol
  • Limit caffeine
  • Take pre-natal vitamins & DHA
  • Take only doctor-approved medications and supplements

6-8 weeks

  • First OB appointment
  • Meet doctor
  • Discuss medical history
  • Physical and pelvic exam
  • Pelvic ultrasound
  • See and hear baby's heartbeat
  • Bloodwork
  • Get additional resources
  • Get flue shot
  • Schedule appointments every four weeks

12 weeks

  • Announce pregnancy to family and friends
  • Nuchal translucency ultrasound
  • Sequential screening blood test - part 1

16 weeks

  • Sequential screening blood test - part 2

18-22 weeks

  • Anatomical OB ultrasound
  • Find out baby's sex
  • Rule out anomalies
  • Make sure baby looks healthy

24-28 weeks

  • Maternal diabetes screening
  • Blood test for anemia & glucose
  • Register for prenatal classes
  • Rhogam injection if RH negative

30-34 weeks

  • Appointments every two weeks
  • Monitor fetal movement
  • Watch for pre-term labor
  • Attend prenatal classes
  • Pack bag for hospital

35-37 weeks

  • Appointments every week
  • Group B strep screening
  • Discuss labor and delivery plan
  • Consider name options
  • Register with hospital

40 weeks

  • Due Date!!
  • Execute labor & delivery plan
  • Fetal monitoring if overdue
  • Birth of baby
  • Bonding
  • Breast-feeding support

6 weeks postpartum

  • Appointment with doctor
  • Breast exam
  • Pelvic exam
  • Discuss anxiety or depression
  • Discuss contraception
